Throwing Caution into the Wind: Simple Tricks in Maintaining Internet Privacy

The internet is truly one of the greatest technological advantages that have been developed and put into practice in the recent years, and there have been a lot of people who have benefitted from the data and other pieces of information that can be easily accessed over the internet in a matter of seconds. And aside from the myriad of information that can be easily accessed over the internet, it has also brought about a string of other interesting activities that can be done by people such as shopping, playing online games, and interacting with their friends and other people through various social networking sites.

But with the ease of transfer of information also comes another problem for users of the internet, and this is the problem regarding internet privacy, which is an issue that has already gained attention due to the increase of crimes that are being committed with the internet serving as an unlikely and inadvertent accomplice. Because of the instantaneous nature of information thanks to the internet, criminals, thieves and even stalkers now also have the ability to obtain the information that they need with relative ease, and people are desperately seeking ways to ensure their privacy and anonymity while on the internet.

But the first that people should realize when it comes to the matter of internet privacy is that the fact that they are using the internet already sacrifices a certain extent of their privacy, since the internet is really all about connectivity and the integration of people who are thousands of miles apart. But for people who wish to evade the possibility of being detected and remain anonymous and hidden while accessing the internet, there are a variety of ways of doing this, the most common of which is to use a public computer, such as those located in public libraries.

This is because a computer that is in a public place also has a public Internet Protocol (IP) Address, which is one piece of information that is unique to every person using a private computer to use the internet and is therefore a key to other people finding out a person's whereabouts. Another means of ensuring internet privacy is to constantly clear the cache and the browsing history of the web browser that was used to access the internet. Doing this would conceal the websites and web pages that have been viewed and accessed by a person, and is especially helpful if a person is using a shared computer or one that is in a public place.

Having strong passwords made up of a unique combination of numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters, and even symbols is also a good means of maintaining privacy while on the internet, especially since there are many people nowadays who have accounts on various social-networking sites. Birth dates or anniversary dates and even names of a person’s favorite sports teams are not good enough passwords for they can still be figured out by other people.

And finally, a more complex way of maintaining internet privacy would be to manipulate a web browser’s privacy settings to make sure that it clears not only the browsing history upon deleting, but also cookies and cache, which can prove to be a treasure trove of information for hackers and identity thieves just waiting for people to commit mistakes.

The internet may have been a groundbreaking invention, but not all people on the internet have the same motives of being there, and some of them have less-than-desirable motives that can prove to be harmful to other people. The trick with maintaining internet privacy is that people should always be careful of what they are doing while they are on the internet, especially if they are in public places.
